Most universities have a library. Miskatonic has a vault. The distinction matters.
Founded in 1797 as a private institution of higher learning, Miskatonic University occupies a hillside campus overlooking the Miskatonic River in Arkham, Massachusetts. The published course catalog lists departments of archaeology, anthropology, geology, medicine, and the liberal arts — standard New England academia. The unpublished course catalog lists a Department of Medieval Metaphysics that has maintained continuous enrollment since 1882 and does not appear on any accreditation document. Applications to this department are not accepted. Students are invited.
The Orne Library
The Henry Armitage Memorial Library — known universally as the Orne Library — houses approximately 400,000 volumes across four floors of open stacks, two floors of closed stacks, and a sub-basement collection that does not appear on the architectural plans filed with the county assessor's office.
The restricted collection contains, at minimum: the Necronomicon (Latin translation, Olaus Wormius, 1228), the Pnakotic Manuscripts (provenance unknown, carbon dating inconclusive), Unaussprechlichen Kulten (Friedrich von Junzt, 1839 Bridewall edition), and the Book of Eibon (partial, Old French). Access requires faculty sponsorship, a demonstrated research need, and ꭥẼŢ̕K̴̡A͕Ḧ̸́ꫂꭥF͔͓̄R̃́̍S͓͑̚ŢC͗. These volumes are not available through interlibrary loan. Requests are not acknowledged.
The security measures around the restricted collection have been upgraded eleven times since 1878. The upgrades correlate exactly with breaches. The most recent breach — August 1928 — resulted in the death of the intruder and a comprehensive review of the guard dog program, which was expanded rather than discontinued.
The Faculty
Miskatonic's faculty publish at rates competitive with Ivy League institutions. Their citation counts are respectable. Their field research is, by any measure, extraordinary — not in volume but in the frequency with which it involves locations, artifacts, or entities that fall outside the scope of conventional academic inquiry.
The pattern is difficult to miss: brilliant researchers, extensive field experience, and an unusually high rate of early retirement, institutionalization, or disappearance. The university's emeritus faculty list contains thirty-seven names. Fourteen of those individuals cannot be located. The HR department classifies them as "on extended sabbatical." Some of these sabbaticals have lasted decades.
Those who remain active display a competence that extends well beyond their published specialties. The geology department chair can read Aklo. The head of medieval studies maintains a personal firearms collection. These are not standard academic qualifications. They are survival adaptations.
The Expeditions
Miskatonic does not officially sponsor paramilitary field operations. Miskatonic has, on no fewer than six documented occasions, dispatched faculty teams to locations of active anomalous phenomena with equipment that included items not typically found in academic supply catalogs.
The 1930-31 Antarctic Expedition — led by Professors Dyer and Pabodie — discovered geological and biological evidence that rewrote the timeline of terrestrial life. The expedition's full findings remain classified within the university. Dyer's published account was edited to the point of fiction. The unedited version sits in the restricted collection, beside the texts it references.
The 1928 Dunwich Intervention — Professors Armitage, Rice, and Morgan — involved the deployment of alchemical compounds and the recitation of passages from the Necronomicon against an active hostile entity. Three academics ascended a hill in rural Massachusetts and destroyed something that the United States military could not have engaged with any weapon in its arsenal. They returned to campus in time for the fall semester. Armitage submitted a travel reimbursement form.
The Innsmouth consultation of 1927-28 provided intelligence that contributed to the federal raid of February 1928. Miskatonic's role is not acknowledged in any government document. The university does not acknowledge it either. Both parties prefer it that way.
Miskatonic responds to phenomena. Unofficially. Deniably. Effectively.
A university that keeps the Necronomicon in a vault and sends its professors into combat. Academic tenure as hazard pay. I would have loved this school. Probably wouldn't have graduated — not because of the coursework, but because I'd have been the idiot who opened the wrong book on the wrong floor at the wrong hour. Some of us are built for the restricted collection. Most of us just think we are.
