The Un-Men are the file the Bureau least likes to discuss, because the Un-Men are not metaphysical horror. They are surgical horror. They are what happens when a faction with the resources of an entire civilization decides that the most reliable way to produce loyal servants is to take human beings and modify them — physically, surgically, irreversibly — until loyalty is the only behavior the modifications permit.
The Ancients build them. The Ancients deny it. The Bureau has the operating-room records.
The Procedure
Documented through three independent intelligence sources and one recovered surgical theater outside Marrakech, raided in 1957 in a joint Bureau / French intelligence operation. Cross-reference the Necronomicon fragments on "wrought men" for the earliest textual precedent, though the procedure documented below is substantially more refined than anything Alhazred described. The procedure begins with a human subject — usually acquired from refugee populations, occasionally from prison populations in regions where the Ancients have political leverage. The subject is not killed. The subject is augmented.
Limbs are added. Organs are added or removed depending on the intended function. Sections of the central nervous system are reconnected to surgical implants whose origins are not industrial — the metalwork is too fine, the alloys too consistent, the wiring too regular for anything human hands have built in the last century. The subject survives. The subject remains conscious throughout. The subject, when the procedure is complete, is no longer capable of disobedience, because disobedience would require executive function the implants have permanently overridden.
The recovered surgical notes describe this as "refinement." The word appears seventeen times in the Marrakech dossier and is the single most distressing feature of the document.
Loyalty Mechanism
Not psychological. The Un-Men do not love the Ancients, do not believe in the Ancients' goals, do not feel any positive emotion about their condition. They obey because the implants make refusal physically impossible. Attempted disobedience triggers neural feedback that escalates from severe pain to motor lockup to terminal cardiac event. The escalation is documented in the Marrakech files. It takes between nine and ninety seconds depending on the subject's baseline cardiac health. It works as designed.
The Bureau physicians who reviewed the data noted, off-record, that the mechanism is not a restraint. It is a replacement. The thing that would have decided to disobey is simply not there anymore. The surviving executive function is sufficient to plan, to execute complex tasks, to recognize threats and respond to them — but not to question the standing orders it was configured with.
Operational Use
The Ancients deploy Un-Men for tasks that require physical capability beyond the human baseline and discretion beyond what a free agent could be relied upon to provide. Construction crews for cathedral sites. Security details for sensitive operations. Occasionally, intelligence functions in regions where a recognizable agent would be a liability.
The Un-Men do not communicate with outside parties. They do not negotiate. They do not surrender. The Ancients do not need them to, and the Un-Men, in any meaningful sense, cannot.
The Marrakech Recovery
- A joint Bureau / French intelligence raid on a building in the Marrakech medina identified as a clandestine surgical facility. Intelligence had been accumulating for six months; the raid was timed to coincide with a scheduled shipment of subjects the Bureau did not want to let arrive.
The raid recovered three Un-Men in mid-procedure, two completed Un-Men in operational condition, and the surgical staff — entirely human, all of whom claimed to have been working under coercion, a claim the Bureau's interrogators found credible in eleven of twelve cases. The completed Un-Men were terminated on-site after they attempted to defend the facility from the raiders. The mid-procedure subjects were transferred to a secure medical facility.
Two died within days. The third — a Tunisian woman whose name the Bureau's records have anonymized as Subject M — survived in a vegetative state for eleven years before her family was permitted to discontinue life support. The file on Subject M is closed at the family's request. It should not be reopened.
Threat Profile
Severe. The Un-Men themselves are individually formidable but not unmanageable. The classification is for the production system: every Un-Man encountered in the field implies a surgical facility, a supply chain of subjects, and an operational doctrine that the Bureau has not been able to disrupt at scale. The Marrakech recovery was the largest single intervention in the Bureau's history on this file. It accomplished Ŵ̸͢M͂͋U̚T̨̃J̵͌ͅ𓆈᳀T̯R̓͐͠P͐K̋̃, which is to say, less than the Bureau hoped and more than the Ancients have acknowledged.
I have read this file three times and each time I have to stop at the word refinement. Not because the violence is worse than other files — it is not, there are files in this directory with higher body counts and worse geometry. It is the word itself. Someone sat down and wrote refinement seventeen times in a surgical log about what they were doing to a human being who was awake on the table. That is not a cosmic entity. That is not a Great Old One operating on a logic we cannot access. That is a person with a pen who chose a word. Whatever the Ancients have done to the Un-Men, they did it through human hands first. That is the part I cannot make peace with.
