The Beyond One is the file that broke the Bureau's classification system. Every other entity in this directory has a location, even when the location is "the Dreamlands" or "outside spacetime as humans experience it." The Beyond One has no location, because the Beyond One is not in any of the places it can affect. It is in the relationships between those places. It is a connection given form. And the form, when it manifests, is the act of physically picking up a dimensional gate from one location and putting it down in another.

The file was opened in 1923. It has not been possible to close it, because closing a file requires knowing where the subject of the file is, and that is the part the Beyond One will not permit.

The Function

A gate, in the Yog-Sothoth-related architecture documented in the Necronomicon, is not a place. It is a stable bridge between two places. Gates can be created (rituals exist), used (rituals exist), destroyed (rituals exist), and — uniquely, in the case of the Beyond One — relocated.

The Beyond One can take a gate, lift it out of its current physical anchor point, and drop it somewhere else. The relocation is not a metaphor. The gate stops being where it was. The gate starts being where it is now. The transition is instantaneous, and the cause of it, when present, is the Beyond One. Rituals that bind a gate to a physical site have been observed to fail catastrophically when the Beyond One elects to override them — the binding does not unravel, it is simply bypassed, because the Beyond One operates at a layer of the architecture the binding is not written against.

The Form

Indeterminate. Witnesses to gate-relocation events describe a "hole in the air" or "a place where the room stops being the room" rather than a creature. Photographic documentation — rare; the Bureau has six confirmed images — shows nothing. The Beyond One does not register on conventional optics. Sensitive instruments register a localized disturbance in space-time of the kind that would normally indicate a gravitational anomaly, except no mass is detectable and the effect does not follow an inverse-square law.

The Pnakotic Manuscripts describe the Beyond One as "that which is between the gate and the key, that which carries what Yog-Sothoth has opened." The Bureau has tried for sixty years to improve on that description. It has not succeeded.

Servitude

The Beyond One serves Yog-Sothoth in the same sense that a hand serves a body. The relationship is structural rather than employer-employee. Yog-Sothoth is the gate and the key, in the Necronomicon's formulation; the Beyond One is the agent that moves the gates around. They are not separate entities in any meaningful sense, but they are also not the same entity, and the distinction matters when the Beyond One acts on instructions that Yog-Sothoth is not directly issuing.

The independent action is the concerning part. There is evidence — inconclusive, circumstantial, but consistent — that the Beyond One will relocate a gate in response to cult ritual, to environmental pressure, or to reasons the Bureau has not been able to model. The Bureau's working physicist calls it "the agent that decides which connections are worth keeping." That is either a metaphor or the most terrifying sentence in the file, and the Bureau has not settled which.

The 1986 Incident

A Bureau facility in A̡͓͌F͕T̋X͔Z͢V̍͌̓U̅̑𓆗ꫂF̵̧͡C̡̮𓆈Ņ͌M̷̓ͅU̵ was studying a recovered gate apparatus. The apparatus was secured in a vault. The vault was monitored continuously — visual, thermal, gravimetric, and three redundant channels the Bureau no longer describes in unclassified summaries. At 03:47 local time on a Tuesday in October, the apparatus was no longer in the vault.

There was no breach. There was no alarm. There was a brief instrument anomaly in the seconds before the disappearance, of the kind that the Bureau now recognizes as the Beyond One's signature — a spatial disturbance lasting 1.3 seconds, centered on the apparatus, with no measurable energy cost. The apparatus has not been recovered. The vault remains in operation, on the Bureau's working theory that whatever the Beyond One found interesting once, it might find interesting again, and the Bureau would prefer to be watching when it does.

The working theory is eleven years old and has produced no additional data.

Threat Profile

Severe. The Bureau cannot contain the Beyond One. The Bureau cannot detect it reliably. The Bureau can, in certain circumstances, predict where it will be needed, by tracking the cult activity that generates gate-creation events. This is the entire monitoring strategy. It is inadequate. It is also the only strategy currently available, and every proposal to improve it has foundered on the same basic problem: you cannot build a better net for something that is not in the water.
